In 2015, we made an important decision. We committed to being the fastest growing stem cell account on Twitter. The decision was inspired by an article we read which identified that increasing numbers of people are now using social media as a news source, gradually replacing traditional news outlets, such as TV and newspapers.
In a USA Today article written by Rem Rieder, he discussed how Twitter “can function as a conveyor belt for first-rate journalism, bringing to your attention terrific material that you might otherwise never encounter.” He then went on to point out that Twitter is a news pipeline for more than 200 million active users, often ‘breaking’ news before it’s actually news.
After reading the article, I decided that we would figure out a system to become the fastest growing stem cell account of Twitter that had all organic (non-paid) followers.
Because of this commitment, we then spent months testing the following variables on Twitter:
- Variations of posting frequency
- Different types of content
- Methods of content re-sharing (e.g. re-publicizing other people’s high performing content)
- Different frequencies and types of hashtag use
- Varied methods of engaging with other influencers on Twitter
We learned an incredible amount from this testing, getting better and better at attracting targeted, engaged Twitter followers. Today, our stem cell account (@StemCellMarket) has approximately 5,500 Twitter followers.
More importantly, that number now increases by 1,000 followers every single month (an average of 36 per day).
Most importantly, all of our users are interested in receiving content specific to our business, which is a market research firm that specializes in stem cell and cord blood markets.
Why You Need Organic Followers
From the start when we launched this project, we determined that we would not pay for followers using “link farms” or “follower scams” (e.g. sites that sell a large number of untargeted followers by having people in India and elsewhere create hundreds of accounts per day). We also decided that we would not use Twitter paid promotions to attract followers.
The reason that we committed to only have organic followers is that we wanted our audience to be engaged about stem cell topics, responsive to our content, and interested in online dialog.
Attracting organic followers is critical, because every time you post a Tweet, Twitter shows it to a fraction of your total followers. Depending on how much engagement that Tweet gets (Likes, Re-Tweets, and Comments), Twitter decides to either show that Tweet to more of your followers or let it fade away.
Therefore, having non-engaged followers is actually incredibly detrimental to the performance of your Twitter account.
Importantly, Twitter will also increase the size of a post when it gets substantial engagement, thereby creating a “snowball” effect, because a larger Tweet is more likely to continue to generate attention. Indeed, Twitter awards high-engagement tweets with a font size is that is 3X as large!
Confused by the Twitter Language? Have Your Twitter Account Handled by Expert
Furthermore, Twitter has a language all its own.
You can tag other people or companies on Twitter using the “@” symbol. You communicate that you are talking about a specific topic by using a hashtag (#). You can even create and assign your own hashtag when you are running an event, such as a conference or meetup, that brings a lot of people together.
For example, the posts above were quotes that I posted while attending the World Stem Cell Summit in Atlanta, GA, over December 3-5, 2015. That conference was assigned the hashtag “#WSCS15” by the organizers, so that all of the attendees could share content together on Twitter.
If you feel confused by this unique digital language, overwhelmed by it, or just plain disinterested, then perhaps it is a sign that you should have your Twitter account managed by an expert.

Massive Engagement and Global Reach Possible with Twitter
When you achieve a strong audience of targeted Twitter followers, you can achieve extremely high levels of engagement and reach. For example, see this image showing that our “Top Tweet” from the past 28 days got 22.9K impressions. That means that 22,900 people saw just one of our Twitter posts.
In total, all of our Tweets got ~300,000 impressions over the past 28 days.
The Top Tweet above also got a lot of “Reshares,” which means that other people were sharing it to their Twitter audience. Additionally, it got a lot of “Likes,” confirming the high-quality nature of our online content.
Next, see a summary of our activity of the trailing 28-day period. In total, we posted 450 tweets. Meaning, we posted one Tweet for every hour that a human is awake each day (16 per day).
Any idea why we did choose this number? EXACTLY. Because an average human is awake 16 hours across an average 24-hour period. Therefore, 16 tweets per day makes us constantly “front-of-mind” for our followers on Twitter.
Additionally, we get approximately 10,000 Profile Visits in a 28-day period too.
Therefore, 10,000 people each month get to see our “Company Description” and get directed to our website (BioInformant.com), because it is featured on our profile.
Finally, the dashboard image above confirms that we gained ~1,000 followers over the past 28 days (990 to be exact).
Drive Large Traffic Volumes to Your Website and Get New Customers
Next, see this image showing the Link Clicks, Retweets, and Likes that our Twitter account got over the Past 28 Days.
An important statistic on Twitter is how many “Link Clicks” you are getting, because it indicates whether you are successfully driving traffic from your Twitter account to your website(s). On average,we are getting 1,100 people per month clicking through our content.

Importantly, the image below also shows that our Twitter content got 795 “Retweets” over the trailing 28 day period, an average of 28 “Re-tweets” per day. This means that 795 people each month are finding our content valuable enough to engage with and share with their own Twitter audience.
Finally, our content got 961 “Likes” over the past 28 days, an average of 34 per day.
Again, this shows that we have attracted Twitter followers who like, value, and engage with our content. Does this sound like the type of person who might buy from you?
